Romain Grosjean has his sights set on a points finish in Hungary after he and Lotus teammate Pastor Maldonado had a British Grand Prix to forget.

The duo’s race came to an abrupt halt on the third corner of the opening lap.

The Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo made contact with Grosjean’s car, which shunted the Frenchman into Maldonado’s in the race which was won by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.

The damage was so bad both cars had to be retired.

“There were a lot of cars into turn three,” said Grosjean.

“Daniel came in hard and hit me, and I collided with the Sauber on the outside, breaking the front wing and it created a puncture.

“The car went left and I hit Pastor, which was a shame.”

Grosjean added: “That was a very short race for the team and I feel for everyone here at Silverstone and at the team headquarters in Enstone.

“No-one likes to end a Grand Prix like that, as so much effort goes into making and preparing the cars.

“I know we have many fans who want to see us race so I feel for them.

“Budapest is next, and we’ve gone well there in the past.

“I’m pumped-up to fight for every single point available.”

Maldonado, who had been looking for his third points haul in a row, was philosophical about what happened on lap one.

He said: “It was a good clean start, but everyone is trying to make up places there.

“I was surprised to be hit by Romain but he’s been caught by Ricciardo so it was a very confusing turn of events.

“At first, I thought I had a puncture and would be able to return to the pits and re-join the race, but unfortunately the damage to the car was more serious than that.

“There is nothing you can do in situations like these as it’s all part of racing. Now my focus is on the next race where we’ll be trying our very best as always.”

Meanwhile, Eynsham's Dave Messenger put in an impressive performance to finish fourth in the Alfa Romeo Twin Spark Cup at Snetterton.

Racing for the first time at the Norfolk track, he qualified third fastest for the first race.

However, it all went wrong when his car was damaged in a first-lap incident, dropping him to last.

He then had to charge back through the field before eventually finishing eighth.

Messenger’s team of mechanics worked through the night to repair the car for the second race, where he finished fourth.
