LOTUS F1 have promoted reserve driver Jolyon Palmer to a race seat for 2016.

He will team up with Pastor Maldonado following the departure of Romain Grosean to the new Banbury-based Haas team.

Palmer has driven for the Enstone-based outfit in several free practice sessions this season.

He joined Lotus F1 in January after winning the 2014 GP2 championship in dominant fashion.

The 24-year-old said: “I’m delighted that I’ll be racing in Formula 1 next year.

“Lotus F1 Team gave me a tremendous opportunity this season and I thank them for assisting my development to a level where they have put their trust in me for a crucial season in their evolution."

“I can’t wait for next season to get under way!”

Maldonado continued his improved form when finishing eighth in the United States Grand Prix at Austin on Sunday, when Lewis Hamilton retained his world crown.

Grosjean retired from the race after damaging his car at the first corner.
