North Leigh notched up their third Evo-Stik Soutehrn League Division 1 South & West win on the trot, with a 2-0 success at strugglers Winchester City.

It was the perfect response to their shock 2-1 midweek home defeat by Hellenic League side Thame United in the quarter-finals of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup.

Missing injured key players Kieran Sanders and John Mills, the Millers nevertheless looked lively in an opening spell, took a deserved lead and never looked back.

North Leigh had a great chance to take the lead in the opening minutes when Andy Caton’s pass found Brian Bowles who could only blast his shot over the bar.

At the other end, centre back Tom Franklin put in a saving tackle on Winchester striker Andrew White.

Mark Gee’s side opened the scoring with a penalty in the seventh minute.

The referee spotted a hefty push on Millers’ striker Ryan Brooks as he was about to head a Stuart Hole’s cross. Hole put away the penalty.

Franklin was forced off because of an injury, but the rejigged defence coped with Winchester’s player-manager James Taylor.

The visitors made it 2-0 just before half-time.

Conor McDonagh pounced on a defensive mix-up between Winchester keeper Rory And-erson and centre back Tommy Turner and buried a shot from close range.

The visitors continued to produce the best chances in the second half.

They almost made it 3-0 when Anderson fumbled a Jacob Walcott shot, but the keeper grabbed Jon Else’s follow-up shot.

Hole and Andy Caton had opportunities, but could not score again.

On Saturday, North Leigh entertain Cinderford Town at Eynsham Park. North Leigh: Warrell, Hole, Caton, Turk, Franklin (Organ 28), Westlake, Walcott (Alexis 85), Bowles, Brooks (Shepperd 73), McDonagh, Else. Sub not used: Clark.
