North Leigh’s ten-game winning Calor League Division 1 South & West run ended with a 1-0 home defeat to a lively Wimborne Town team.

The visitors grabbed a breakaway goal in first-half stoppage time and then hung on gamely through a second half when they were under almost constant pressure.

After a two-week break, Leigh looked a bit sluggish in the opening exchanges, with Jamie Davidson’s early effort having home keeper Paul White scrambling. However, Leigh got into their normal stride after ten minutes, Aaron Woodley charging down an attempted clearance and fizzing his shot just wide.

Wayne Turk then had a goalbound volley blocked, before away keeper Jason Harvell made a wonderful save.

He somehow managed to parry the ball over after Elliott Osborne-Ricketts met Woodley’s fine centre with a powerful shot from five yards out.

Kieran Sanders and Morgan Williams both came close to scoring for the home side, but then came the decisive goal.

Wimborne broke from a corner and Mark Gamble ran on before finding James Stokoe for a neat finish at the far post.

The second half saw the hosts pressing from the off, and although they ran themselves into the ground, they couldn’t prise open a resolute Wimborne defence.

With changes up front and in midfield, the Millers battled away.

They went closest on 75 minutes when Williams evaded the offside trap, surged forward and hit a hard, low shot that cannoned off the advancing keeper.

Shortly afterwards, a Sanders free-kick chipped over the wall nearly squeezed past keeper Harvell, but he managed to get a glove on it by his near post and deflect it for another corner.

The Millers pushed hard to the end, but it wasn’t to be.

The result still leaves them in top spot, but only on goal difference. On Saturday they travel to Yate Town.
