Jamie Cook scored a last-gasp penalty winner as North Leigh got their Division 1 South & West play-off challenge back on track with a 3-2 victory at Mangotsfield United on Saturday.

With the game deep into injury time and having been pegged back to 2-2, it looked as though the Millers would have to settle for a point.

It followed last Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against leaders Merthyr Town where Morgan Williams put them ahead before Ryan Prosser levelled with a late penalty.

But substitute Cook struck to move them within three points of fifth place.

North Leigh started quickly and almost took an early lead when Kieran Sanders took advantage of a slip by home keeper Joe Perry, only to see his lob go wide.

The visitors were dominating proceedings, but were unable to turn it into goals and paid the price on 33 minutes when Mangotsfield went into the lead.

Matt Groves broke forward and clipped the ball past the advancing Millers’ goalkeeper Matt Bulman.

However, North Leigh levelled on 53 minutes.

Aaron Woodley broke down the right wing before his cross was converted by Morgan Williams.

North Leigh had a lucky escape when Lewis Powell saw his effort come back off a post.

But on 81 minutes Mark Gee’s side went ahead.

Cook saw his terrific effort smash against the bar, but Callum McNish was on hand to crash home the rebound from close range into the top of the net.

That should have been it, but Mangotsfield kept going forward and equalised on 88 minutes with a controversial penalty.

Defender Zak Westlake was penalised for a foul on Ryan Bath, which appeared to be outside the penalty area.

However, Powell fired in the resulting spot-kick, despite the Millers’ vigorous protests.

But they didn’t let their heads drop and on 93 minutes, the Millers got their reward with the winner.

Cook was brought down by Shaun Lamb as he charged through on goal.

The substitute then regained his composure, cooly clipping home his penalty clincher.

This Saturday, the Millers visit Larkhall Athletic.
