Chipping Norton trainer Charlie Longsdon was thrilled to see Wilberdragon win at Ascot on Saturday for owners Rachel Jenner and Julie Green following their recent loss of No No Romeo at Worcester.

The four-year-old, bought out of Venetia Williams’s yard in the spring having finished seventh on his only start at Ffos Las, took up the running approaching the final furlong in the closing two-mile bumper, and galloped clear under Charlie Deutsch to beat Desilvano by two and a quarter lengths.

Longsdon said: “I am so pleased for the owners, who lost a nice horse two weeks ago at Worcester.

“He won very nicely and might go hurdling now because he jumps for fun.

“He ran once last season and was probably very weak.”

Wilberdragon was a 16-1 shot, but his bold display came as no surprise to Longsdon.

“I thought he would run well,” he commented. “I said he would run a lot better than at Ffos Las. I thought he had an each-way chance.

“Charlie is as good a 7lb claimer as there is around.”

Longsdon also ended a run of more than five seasons without a winner at Taunton when Pure Style scored at the Somerset track.

Aidan Coleman was on board as the six-year-old romped home by eight lengths from Houston Dynimo in a handicap hurdle over an extended two miles and three furlongs.
