Chipping Norton-based jockey Kielan Woods was overjoyed after notching the biggest success of his career on runaway winner Croco Bay at Ascot on Saturday.

The 22-year-old’s mount, trained by Ben Case at Edgcote, near Banbury, turned the Country Living Handicap Chase over two miles and a furlong into a procession to stroll home by 19 lengths and capture the first prize of £43,330.

Woods, on his first ride over fences at the Berkshire track, said: “I didn't dare look behind me.

“I was thinking I might get my first winner here and on Channel 4, so I’m absolutely thrilled and delighted with the horse.”

And he added: “His jumping is very quick. He is a very exciting horse.

“He could be a horse for round Aintree.”

Chipping Norton trainer Charlie Longsdon was among the winners at Ascot the previous day when Grandads Horse defied top weight in a three-mile handicap chase.

The eight-year-old stayed on well under Noel Fehily to beat Tullamore Dew by two and a quarter lengths at 10-1.

Longsdon said: “Two years ago he broke his knee and we never thought he would get back to the racecourse.

“He has now won five races since, making it 11 wins in total.”

The master of Hull Farm Stables completed a 21-1 across-the-card double when Midnight Shot landed a Haydock bumper in good style under Charlie Deutsch.

Longsdon had ended a frustrating spell without a winner the previous day when Shantou Magic got off the mark over fences at Market Rasen.

The seven-year-old bounced back from his heavy fall at Carlisle to capture a novices’ limited handicap chase by four and a half lengths from Viva Steve, with Fehily on board.
