Chipping Norton trainer Charlie Longsdon could run Ely Brown in the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown on Saturday week after his charge’s first-fence fall in the Crabbie’s Grand National.

The ten-year-old, a 100-1 outsider, fired Brian Hughes into the turf within seconds of the tapes going up, leaving the trainer with a feeling of anti-climax.

Longsdon said: “He jumped the fence great, but with the extra speed that they all go on the run up and, combining that with the bigger fence, meant that he couldn’t get his landing gear out – it was a typical first-fence fall for the National.

“We live to fight another day and Ely will probably be aimed at the bet365 now in a couple of weeks.”

Meanwhile, Longsdon could have another big-race runner this Saturday with Drop Out Joe in the frame for the Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr.

The seven-year-old, who finished a seven-lengths second to Wayward Prince in the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster last time out, needs three higher-weighted entries to drop out to get a run.
