THERE was joy for Witney Wolves Rugby SEN, who picked up a prize at the Oxfordshire Sports Awards night at Oxford’s Kassam Stadium.

Wolves, who are a mixed tag rugby team for children and young adults with learning difficulties, as opposed to those with just physical disabilities, landed the Disability Sports accolade after finishing runners-up last year.

Head coach Jeremy Bristoe received the award along with fellow coach Dec Armstrong and young player James Paul, 18, who has been with the club since he was eight.

Bristoe said: “This is a great recognition for the club which caters for a wide range of disabilities.

“Our coaching is geared towards our international festival, which will be held at Witney RFC in June.

“My one regret is that rugby union is the only major sport that does not fund the disability side of the game, although we do get support from the RFU’s Wooden Spoon charity.”

Meanwhile, Eynsham Road Runner Kate Williamson, 70, had to settle for a runners-up position in the sportswoman of the year prize.

Williamson, who lives in Witney, broke a 23-year-old veteran 70 record at the Virgin Money London Marathon, with a time of 3hrs 42mins 42secs.

She also won her class in the Mota-vation series.

The award went to triple rowing Olympic silver medallist Frances Houghton, from Wheatley.
