OXONIAN Cycling Club, formed on March 7 1927, marked their 90th anniversary with a celebratory dinner for 80 members and guests at the Witney Lakes resort.

BBC Sports commentator Simon Brotherton was guest of honour.

In the early days, the club concentrated on track racing with events at Iffley Stadium, but as time progressed this co-existed with time-trialling.

Throughout the period 1950 to 1975 there were ground-breaking performances in time trials from Barry Thornton and Mick Bowen (current president) Granville Olive and Dick McTaggart.

The club were chosen to stage the National 25-mile time trial on the Kidlington-Bicester road in 1956 and 1964.

Bowen was the first to break the two-hour barrier for 50 miles in 1960, a record that stood for 27 years. Mat Rowleyimproved that last year to 1hr 46mins 8secs.

Nick Oakley set a 12-hour record of 270 miles in1982, and Granville Olive the 24-hour record of 464 miles in 1975.

Malcolm Rose recorded a stunning ten-miles time of 19 mins 20secs last year.

The club promotes an annual road race which last year attracted some 80 competitors.

The annual cyclo-cross promotion held last November drew more than 400 riders.

There are weekly coaching sessions for young riders at Oxford Spires Academy and Bicester Airfield.
