Tyrone Barnett was disappointed his goals were unable to get Oxford United through in the FA Cup – because he cannot help them in the replay.

The striker scored twice in five minutes as the U’s came from behind against Tranmere to lead the tie.

But the Merseysiders hit back to make it 2-2 and they will not have to worry about Barnett in the return, because his loan from Peterborough expires after this weekend.

The 29-year-old said: “I think we had enough chances again to get the win to stop the replay, but it wasn’t to be.

  •  Latest United news:

“My loan ends against Bury, so unfortunately I won’t be there to travel to Tranmere.

“It’s unlucky not to get the win to be in the next round, but we are still in the hat.

“I don’t think we’re frustrated, we are creating the chances.”

Barnett’s double took his tally with United to five goals, three of which have come in the last two games.

While his first effort was a close-range header, the second showed the sort of class in the box which United have only seen glimpses of during his loan spell.

Collecting Joe Riley’s pass, Barnett beat his marker with a sharp turn and slammed a low shot into the net.

He said: “I just played what came to me really.

“The gaffer has been telling me to make the run inside the full backs and I can see why now – that was a great move.”
