JOHNNY Mullins says he would understand if Oxford United boss Michael Appleton rested him at some stage in the remaining three games.

The 29-year-old and centre half partner Jake Wright have started more games than anyone in the squad this season.

Mullins has been in the XI 46 times out of 49 games, while United’s skipper has only missed two fixtures.

Appleton has made it clear the run-in would be used to look at alternative options, with Jamie Ashdown replacing Ryan Clarke in goal.

Last week the U’s boss named centre back Chey Dunkley as one player he was keen to see in action before the summer.

It would almost certainly mean either Mullins or Wright were displaced, possibly away to Tranmere Rovers tomorrow.

And while Mullins is keen to play, the experienced defender would have no problem with being the one to miss out.

He said: “We’ve played a lot of games this season myself and Jake.

“We’ve shown the gaffer what we’re capable of and I think it’s only fair, as long as the gaffer thinks it’s right, that other players get their chance to shine.

“As a footballer you never want to miss any games, but sometimes circumstances are beyond your control.

“We can’t do much about that, but when we play we make sure we give our all.”

Mullins has another season left on his contract and is hoping to be celebrating in 12 months’ time.

He said: “I came here to gain promotion, so hopefully next season I can get there.”
