OXFORD United’s players and staff were stunned with the efforts of the 200 supporters who turned out to watch them on tour in Austria last night.

While the game against SC Wiener Neustadt ended in a goalless draw, much of the entertainment came in the stands, where the travelling fans were determined to enjoy themselves.

Afterwards the players came across to thank them and ended up taking photographs of the turnout.

U’s boss Michael Appleton said: “It was fantastic. The fans were absolutely magnificent, I haven’t seen anything like that for years.

“I said to the players before the game, don’t turn it into a testimonial, make sure we get about and try to create some atmosphere – as it happened we didn’t need to do that.”

Full back George Baldock was just as amazed.

“The fans were incredible, I hate to think what it would be like if we get promoted,” he said.

“I couldn’t believe it, I took a few pictures to show the boys back home, I loved it.

“I didn’t expect that, I got told a couple of hundred were coming out, but I didn’t really believe it.

“It was absolutely brilliant and I’d love to see what they’re like in May if we go up.”

Baldock and Joe Skarz may miss training today after picking up slight knocks, but neither are believed to be serious.

Appleton admitted before the game he had no idea what to expect and, although United’s finishing was rusty, the head coach was pleased with the contest.

He said: “It was great, it did feel like a proper European tie away from home.

“Everything about it – the referee, the way the opposition go down at times, the way the pitch was sticky – but fair play to the lads, they did themselves no harm at all.

“If I’m being greedy I thought we should have won comfortably.

“We had a couple of good opportunities, we had a penalty shout (on Ryan Taylor) which was literally NFL stuff.

“It’s slightly irritating, but it’s a clean sheet and a work in progress.”
