OXFORD United’s reward for their Capital One Cup shock in midweek is a first clash away to Sheffield Wednesday for nearly two decades.

Michael Appleton’s men missed out on a meeting one of the 12 Premier League sides which entered the second round for last night’s draw.

But a trip to Hillsborough to face the Owls, where United have not visited since a League Cup tie in 1996, should prompt a repeat of the large travelling support which roared them to a 4-0 first round success at Brentford on Tuesday night.

Mark Ashton, United’s chief executive, said: “It’s a big club with a huge fanbase in a real footballing city.

“I would imagine there would be a decent crowd there and I’d like to think our fans will follow us in numbers again, just as they did at Brentford.

“Is it winnable? Michael will certainly want to have a go at getting through, that’s for sure.”

Paul Moody struck a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough on United’s last visit, which was also in the second round.

United went through in the second leg a week later, when Nigel Jemson scored the only goal of the game at the Manor Ground.
