OXFORD United have completed the signings of forward Chris Maguire and midfielder Joe Rothwell.

The pair completed their medicals at the Kassam Stadium and are now on their way to Spain to join up with the rest of the squad.

For Maguire the one-year deal marks a return to the U's, having joined on a short-term contract in January, while Rothwell turned down a new contract at Manchester United to sign a two-year deal with the Sky Bet League One club.

Maguire was offered a new deal in May after scoring four goals in 24 starts, where he particularly impressed during the run-in to United’s promotion-winning campaign.

U’s boss Michael Appleton said: “When it really matters in the big games, that’s when he comes to play.

“I think his performances towards the end of the season proved that.”

After a lengthy delay, United made an improved offer last week, which the 27-year-old has now signed.

Rothwell, 21, leaves Old Trafford without making his senior debut, although he was included in Louis van Gaal’s matchday squad for the 1-0 home Premier League win over Watford in March.

The attacking midfielder’s only senior experience came in brief spells on loan at Blackpool and Barnsley.

Appleton said: “I’ve known him for two or three years now.

“I’m not a big fan of under-21 football in terms of watching it, but there’s plenty of talent there, which I think needs to get out and play football – I think Joe is one of those.

“He’s done ever so well for Man United in their youth sides and under 21s over the last couple of years and I feel it’s a good time for him to go and spread his wings.”
