THE flight home from Spain on Saturday told you everything about what had been achieved by Oxford United on the field at their training camp.

While the mood on the way out was lively, most used the journey home from Malaga to catch up on some sleep.

With the possible exception of the travelling media, it was not down to overindulging at the bar the night before – they were simply worn out.

With seven training sessions and two games in the space of five baking hot days, they returned having taken a big step forward to being prepared for the big kick-off on August 6.

Behind the scenes it was also an eye-opening few days to see just how deals are sealed, or collapse.

On any other of United’s recent tours the appointment of a new captain would have been the major headline, but John Lundstram’s big moment quickly got overtaken.

Two players arrived, one exited for big money and negotiations for a host of other targets rumble on.

One element which was consistent with previous tours was the travelling support, who again left a lasting impression on locals and the squad alike.

Many clubs visiting the Kassam Stadium this season will bring fewer than 600 supporters for a league game – United had that for a friendly on the Costa del Sol.

Where are we going next year?
