OXFORD United will host Brighton & Hove Albion in the EFL Cup second round – a month after the Sky Bet Championship side romped to a 4-0 victory at the Kassam Stadium.

The U’s missed out on the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton in last night’s draw, but a clash with the Seagulls gives them a chance to make amends for a poor display in pre-season.

Chris Hughton’s side were a class above their hosts in July’s friendly.

But Michael Appleton, whose U’s side knocked out Birmingham City 1-0 after extra time on Tuesday night, is expecting far more second time around.

The head coach said: “It’s certainly an opportunity to try and put in a much better performance than we did in pre-season.

“I know we don’t read too much into pre-season results but from a performance point of view we all agreed we didn’t work hard enough to get anything out of it.

“I think we have addressed that since the start of the season.

“They will still go in as massive favourites because they are a top quality side and I’m sure they will be pushing to be in the Premier League.

“I would like to think we will be a sterner test for them than we were three weeks ago.”

It will be United’s first home game in the competition for eight ties, a run stretching back to the penalty shootout win over Bournemouth in 2012.

Appleton’s side knocked Swansea City out of the FA Cup in January – one of several memorable cup games on home soil last season.

And the U’s boss called for a similar turnout to boost the chances of another upset.

He said: “The thing with Swansea and others like it at home such as the Swindon or Millwall games, they have been big crowds. It certainly helps a lot.

“If we can get close to a full house it will certainly give us a better chance.”
