Potter strike earns battling Oxford United a point

Alfie Potter prepares to pull the trigger for United’s equaliser Alfie Potter prepares to pull the trigger for United’s equaliser

Burton Albion 1

(Bolder 13)

Oxford United 1

(Potter 59)

Alfie Potter scored a superb equaliser as Oxford United battled back for a 1-1 draw in npower League Two at the Pirelli Stadium today.

It saw the U's go back into the play-offs and was no more than they deserved after a batlling second-half display.

The Us's were looking to get back to winning ways after the disappointment of the draw with Hereford and the loss to Crewe.

They were also anxious to get back into the play-offs after dropping to eighth following Saturday's results.

Oxford made one change to the side that drew with Hereford last week, with Asa Hall coming in for the suspended Damian Batt.

Asa Hall took over Andy Whing's defensive midfield role.

It was the home side who started the stronger, with Jacques Maghoma causing problems on the right flank. Burton took the lead on 13 minutes after a concerted spell of pressure from the home side. The elusive Andres Gurriera got down the right side of the area and cut the ball back for Adam Bolder to smash the ball home from ten yards past Ryan Clarke. Seconds earlier, Clarke made a super save to deny Brewers skipper John McGrath after Callum Driver's cross from the right was missed by Calvin Zola, before Andy Whing made a super block on that man Gurriera.

It was all Burton with Oxford forced to defend in numbers and the visitors were grateful to Liam Davis for making a great block on Maghoma as he tried to make it 2-0.

Oxford's first chance didn't arrive until 36 minutes when Alfie Potter fed Simon Heslop but he blasted over.

Just before the break, Jon-Paul Pittman saw his shot charged down after good work from Whing.

Oli Johnson was brought into the fray for the second half, with Hall coming off as the U's changed their formation to an attcking 4-4-2 formation.

Jake Wright made a good challenge on Maghoma as Burton came out looking to build on their lead.

Potter almost levelled when the winger broke clear only for Atkins to tip his well-struck shot for a corner.

Oxford kept up the pressure and it paid off with the equaliser on 59 minutes. Potter weaved his way through the Brewers defence before smashing the ball past Atkins into the far corner. The last time he scored was back in September - against Burton.

Minutes later Johnson burst through, but his shot lacked power. Just after the hour mark, James Constable saw his left-foot shot fizz inches wide of the Burton goal.

The U's more positive approach was paying dividends, with Burton looking a bit rattled, with Constable a constant menace.

Pittman was getting better as the game went on with his strong running causing problems.

Both sides went for the kill and it was hard to predict who would win it.

Pittman broke down the right and drew a foul by Ryan Austin, but Peter Leven's free-kick was easily held by Atkins.

Potter had the chance to win it for the U's on 86 minutes, but his lacked power as a grateful Atkins gathered the ball.

Leven then went close with a free-kick.

At the other end, Adie Yussef went close to winning it for Albion, but his shot went wide.

Oxford threw everyone forward, but Burton held on to deny them.

Wilder out? Don't be silly. We wouldn't be in the play off positions without him.

Surely the way he managed to turn it around in the second half shows that he; 1) has the respect of the dressing room, 2) is able to motivate, and 3) has the tactical nous to spot where a game needs changing.
.
A point away to Burton is a good result. Let's hope for a good new addition before the deadline, and get behind the team for our promotion push.

KT has until Tuesday to push the boat out. Crazy match really, played like a Sunday league side in the first half, last 45 minutes, we could have beaten anyone (with a decent finisher). Wilder certainly did the business at half time, but is a 50% manager going to get us promotion. !. Seems players are flourishing when they get away from our recent style of play , Payne & Chappers were well rated yesterday, so don't even mention Green or Midson. Never mind at least we don't have an out of control nutter for a manger.

Got to agree with our Friend down the road. Not good enough at all. End of January and we are scrapping it out for last play off spot with 5 or 6 other teams. Teams above us are slowly pulling away. The way things are going we are looking at a mid table finish. In my eyes that is not good enough. Something needs to be done before it is too late.
And well done Swindon. Read the report in the paper this morning and by all accounts you did League 2 proud. Regardless of the History between us good football should always be commended.
Have a good week all

Afraid to say I've seen it all before. It's been apparent for some time now that things are not working as well as they should be. True a point away today could be seen as a good result but other results have suggested that we are going to struggle. At what point are things gonna change? When we suddenly find ourselves mid-table. Seen it so many times before. Promise much. Achieve little. It's not a question of faith. It's about being realistic with what we have got. Star striker not even hit double figures yet. Not a promotion winning tally really. Thank god we have a solid defence else we'd be in all sorts of trouble

We have been a mid table side all season.

What is worrying is the board is content with the situation and their only strategy appears to be survival and to turn a profit.

We have no money for new players and will happily sell to anyone.

Other clubs on the breadline will try to develope youngsters and sell them on but again no sign of it here.

What about buying players and selling them on - no we will only take on free transfers.

Attract better players at the end of their career - again no apart from Duberry of course. but wht not more ?

Most frustrating for the fans.

They are being short changed at present. No cup run for years and little to look forward too. As I said previously the season finished for us in December - now watch the attendances fall.

By the way - the reason we don't let goals in is that wwe have a defensive manager.

Accept it - wa are going nowhere fast

I think a point at Burton is a good result. Some one will be on the end of a hiding from us soon, and then I reckon we can go another 5 or 6 unbeaten. Keep the faith!

442 (of course) - but with Alfie on the wing. Need more fire power in the middle up front.

As always expectations too high – sometimes stopping your opposition winning is the name of the game. A Burton win would have taken them into the play offs. A point won most would say.
