JAKE Wright says the Oxford United back line are happy with their contribution in recent games, and are determined not to let standards drop, writes MARK EDWARDS.

Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to Plymouth Argyle means the U’s have conceded just one goal in their last five matches.

And the United skipper says the form of the team ensures head coach Michael Appleton does not have too many headaches when it comes to picking the starting XI.

“We are very happy with four clean sheets out of five,” he said.

“A clean sheet guarantees you a point, and hopefully more often than not you can get more.

“But Plymouth are a good team so to get a point is a decent result.”

He added: “We have had a settled side of late and really we have made it easier for the manager. If you play well, you keep the shirt and he can pick a settled side.

“If you’re inconsistent, he can’t pick the same team and that was the problem earlier in the season. We could not find that level of consistency.”

Wright also had praise for the United supporters who turned out in numbers – the crowd of 8,057 was the biggest of the season – and got right behind the team.

“We know we haven’t given the fans too much to cheer this season,” he said.

“But as soon as we got in the changing room we said what a difference it makes when they are behind you.

“It was a cagey second half, but they stuck with us.”
