WHILE it has been a disappointing season collectively for Oxford United, the brightest sparks have often come from the squad’s younger players.

Callum O’Dowda has made big strides since last summer and James Roberts’ five goals have thrust him into the spotlight.

In a quieter way, Sam Long has also played his part.

The 20-year-old from Bicester had to wait until December for a chance under head coach Michael Appleton, but has fared well when called upon.

Long made his seventh appearance of the season in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Northampton Town and with George Baldock remaining a doubt, he could continue against Tranmere tomorrow.

Although the defender’s future is up in the air – United have a 12-month option on him – Long is satisfied with his return and hopes it leads to more regular action.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying my football at the moment and long may it continue,” he said.

“I’ve played a few games now and I want to keep playing as many games as I can.

“At the start of the season I wanted to play in the first team and obviously I’ve achieved that this year.”

The former youth team skipper is a centre back by trade, but has mainly been used as a full back so far.

Appleton will have no qualms about throwing him in again at Prenton Park tomorrow, if needed.

He said: “Sam’s never let the club down, he’s been good for us this year.

“Yes, he’s a centre half, but he does ever so well and isn’t embarrassed by the ball as a full back.”

One of Long’s strengths is a useful ability to get into scoring positions.

His maiden senior goal came in the 3-2 defeat at home to Southend United in January and had an opportunity against Northampton, but blazed over.

He said: “I was a bit disappointed myself and my old man did tell me I should’ve scored.

“All the boys say I’m in the right place at the right time.

“I don’t know if I do it naturally, but I always seem to have a few chances in a game when it comes to set pieces.

"It's a good knack to have."
