DARRYL Eales is aiming for Oxford United to become the best family club at next year’s Football League Awards after winning the divisional title last weekend.

The club’s work in the community has been a key focus for the U’s chairman since taking over in July 2014.

They have since launched a variety of initiatives aimed at making the Kassam Stadium a welcoming place for families.

They also put on a special coach for the away day at Stevenage last October, which was part of United’s submission for the Football League Awards.

It saw them named Sky Bet League Two’s family club of the year on Sunday and now Eales is keen to win the overall crown, won by Fulham.

He said: “I’ve said consistently over the past two years that success on the pitch is one priority, but up there from my perspective is making the club part of the community.

“Getting family club of the year is a fantastic accolade.

“It’s deserved recognition for a lot of the behind the scenes staff – Sarah (Gooding), Caroline (Robbins), Lowesey (Chris Lowes) and many others.

“But it’s a first step on a journey.

“For me it’s about how we get family club across the Football League and, more importantly, how do we truly make a difference in the community.

“Overall it’s a fantastic achievement.”
