PLAYING Ryan Taylor in left midfield against Bradford City was an easy decision to make, according to Oxford United boss Michael Appleton.

The target man did an emergency job in a wide role when the U’s were down to ten men against Swindon Town last month, but against the Bantams he started on the flank.

Taylor finished the game – which United won 1-0 – up front, but while Appleton acknowledged the selection will have been questioned by many, it was a straightforward choice with specialist winger Marvin Johnson struggling for form.

He said: “Ryan has played there about 60 times (in his career).

“I thought he played ever so well, not only aerially and with his aggression, but with good touches and bringing people into play.

“I know it was a surprising choice for everyone, but it was easy for me having seen the clips of them and watching Ryan in training.

“It’s there for all to see that Marv’s struggling with a bit of confidence at the minute.

“I think the best option for him at the minute is coming off the bench, similar to what we did with Callum (O’Dowda) last year.”

Although Chris Maguire’s winner arrived in stoppage time, there was no shortage of belief inside the Kassam Stadium.

Appleton said: “I’ve got to say a thank you to the fans as well because I think they saw we were on the front foot in the second half.

“They saw we were having a right go and they got behind us. The atmosphere was electric.”

United were without Liam Sercombe, who missed a league game through injury for the first time since joining the club 17 months ago.

The midfielder’s tight groin means he is also likely to miss tomorrow night’s trip to Coventry City.

Striker Wes Thomas is also expected to be ruled out of the game at the Ricoh Arena after coming off with a calf strain.
