OXFORD United are planning to invite as many of Graham Atkinson’s teammates at the Kassam Stadium to celebrate his life.

It is hoped the tribute to the club’s record scorer, who died last week aged 73, will take place at the Emirates FA Cup fourth round tie against Newcastle United or Birmingham City later this month.

Last week we asked for readers to send in their memories.

Robin Gladwin, who made 48 appearances for the U’s as a full back, said: “I played at Oxford united for a short period with Graham, a very nice person and a talented footballer.

“I think most players who shared the pitch with him believed could have played for England in his prime as many lesser players have done.”

Supporter Laurence Waters was present to see Atkinson score United’s first goal in the Football League, in a 3-2 defeat at Barrow in August 1962.

He wrote: “We got to the ground quite early and had a chance to speak to many of the Oxford players, Graham included.

“They were amazed that we had travelled so far to see the first game, we actually drove up on the Friday afternoon and stayed in Morecambe.

“I used to have the programme signed by a number of Oxford’s players Graham included.

“I remember he went to Cambridge on loan for a while and on his return he was a different player, he was always a cultured inside forward but after he came back from Cambridge he could not stop scoring goals.

“A great player, sadly missed.”

John Masters, another lifelong United fan, said: “One of my favourite memories is when Graham returned on loan from Cambridge United.

“I was with my late brother Bob when we played Barrow at home and we won 7-0 – still the club’s record home win – when Graham scored a hat-trick.

“We should have an Atkinson Stand in honour of the great Atkinson brothers.”
