Oxford United boss Wilder in double swoop

OXFORD United should have two new faces in their squad for the New Years Day trip to Rushden & Diamonds.

Midfielder Lee Fowler joined yesterday on a deal until the end of the season after he was released from Kettering.

And boss Chris Wilder is confident that a left-sided central defender will sign today.

“We want to make sure that the players and the supporters know that we are not by any means resting of what we’ve got,” Wilder said.

“We have bought in Lee, should complete another one first thing tomorrow and hopefully another in the not-to distant future.

“We want to really push on now – we’ve only done half a job and need to finish it off now.”

Fowler was delighted to have joined the table-toppers.

“I have played a good few games in the Football League and want to play more there,” he said.

“Things haven’t worked out for me how I would have liked of late, and so I am determined to put that right here.”

Fowler will go straight into the United squad for the Blue Square Premier clash, but may not feature.

Wilder explained: “He has not been playing of late and so may not be ready to be thrown straight in.

“But after the FA Trophy game a week Saturday we have two games a week for a while so we’ll make sure he’s 100 per cent by then.”

I understand that Anthony Tonkin, the Cambridge left back, should sign early next week for the U’s after playing in Cambridge’s game at Stevenage.

Damian Batt is the only United player out of the Rushden clash, a game that sees Ross Perry and Onome Sodje play their last games for the club following loan spells.

Another centre-back? Well I suppose Perry has gone. But Day nay? Not complainin' like....

A description I've read of Tonkin sounds pretty good.

Build it up with yellow and blue...

Am I imagining things, or is CW a bit of an impulse buyer? I mean, in his short time here, he's brought in players like Sappleton, killock, Rhodes, Kelly, Day, etc. and then shipped them out pretty soon after, or just not played them enough. In case you say: "They weren't good enough", couldn't more scouting work had been done on them?

This is just my opinion;

I think we should've made an enquiry about Mangan, Tubbs and Lee Tomlin from Rushden. Ok, we might've been rejected, but those type of players would help us at least stay up next season (Please)

Our attacking force at present (Not inc. Beano) can be pretty awful, from what I've seen, home and away.

I just hope we don't regret not signing Barnes-Homer - Prima Donna or not!

Lets hope Tonkin plays a blinder for Cambridge against Stevenage. A point for Cambridge, that will do nicely thank you and please keep all eleven on the field this time.

I must admit to being rather suprised at another central defender. With Tonkin coming in next week it still only gives us two quality fullbacks including Batt. Not being too unkind to Sandwith, but he has not really covered himself in glory yet, If Tonkin or Batt get injured then we are struggling again. Chapman does put a good effort in, but he is a midfielder playing in defence...just does not work. Matt Green and Cookey have gone off the boil and Frannie Green to me is another Farrell, works well but does not score. However CW is the man, lets hope tomorrow's game is on and three points gathered.
