Oxford University flanker Gus Jones is determined to make a career with their most recent opponents Wasps.

England Under 20 international Jones helped the Dark Blues to a 24-10 victory over a side featuring many of his Wasps academy teammates on Tuesday night.

But when he completes his biological sciences degree next summer, he hopes to play professionally with the Premiership club.

“That’s the goal,” said Jones.

“I just need to make sure that I make some big leaps forward this year and then hopefully they will consider me going full-time.

“I also have to pass my degree!”

Jones added: “I will stay involved with Wasps throughout this year and they have been excellent with helping me develop while I have been here and at school.

“The Varsity Match is the first thing on the horizon and then after that to continue to be involved with Wasps and maybe go on loan to a club somewhere, but that’s unconfirmed at this point.”

Should Jones get a Wasps contract, he will follow Dark Blues lock Will Rowlands, who joined them full-time this summer.

“Will and I are quite close,” he said. “We got to know each other well.

“It is very good to see him kicking on and hopefully start to make a name for himself.”

As for playing against his club side at Iffley Road, Jones said: “It was really fun.

“I know a lot of these boys really well and they are all outstanding players, so it was very competitive.

“Maybe there is a little bit more of an edge to it than if you are playing people that you don’t know.

“They were very good and very sporting.”

The Dark Blues fared far better than the previous week’s 74-10 hammering by Northampton.

But Jones said: “There is still a long, long way to go until we will be satisfied with our performance.

“We may not even get to a point where we are satisfied. We can always keep improving.

“But it is nice to come up against a team with some real good pedigree in it and get a win. It is a step forward.

He added: “Defensively, I was really pleased with a lot of our work.

“Last week was a bit of a reality check for us and everyone worked really hard this week to try and make sure that something like that didn’t happen again.

“We put some things right, but there are still a lot of little areas that we can improve on.”
