Lewis Anderson is all set to make make history in the 133rd University Match at Twickenham next week.

The 24-year-old Oxford University prop is one selection away from aiming for a record-breaking five wins in the famous fixture.

No player from either camp has ever managed to post five victories in the 132 matches played since 1872 and only five players have ever played five times or more.

If he gets the nod to pack down on the loosehead side of the scrum on Thursday December 11, the sociology student Anderson will join another prop, Tim Enevoldson, and wing Rupert Vessey as the only Dark Blues to appear five times in the match.

The record for the fixture, however, is held by former England international Herbert George Fuller with six appearances for Cambridgebetween 1879-1883.

But Anderson, who in conjunction with Nick Gardner and Ian Williams in the Oxford front row laid the foundation for victory at Twickenham last year, only needs one more win at the home of English rugby to overtake Richard Bramley and another Light Blue legend, Carl Aarvold.

“I wanted to progress and stay at Oxford academically and it’s given me a brilliant opportunity to go for five wins in a row.

“I’ve only recently found out about the history,” said the Trinity College student.

“It’s exciting to know that there have been more than a century of players playing this much before us.

"It would be great to write my name into the history books, but all I am focussing on is the match – if selected.

“The records are just a footnote.”

Meanwhile, Oxford had a disappointing end to their Varsity Match preparation with a 36-21 loss away to Esher Cardinals on Sunday.

The Dark Blues raced into a 21-point lead just after half-time, tries from George Cullen, Jacob Taylor and Sam Peter, two of them set up by Henry Lamont.

All three were converted by George Cullen.

But a mass of second-half substitutions disrupted Oxford’s rhythm and allowed Esher to mount an incredible comeback with five tries in the last half-hour.

After the game Dark Blues’ coach James Wade remained pleased with his side’s performance despite the miserable second half showing.

“We had a really strong first 50 minutes,” Wade said.

“I changed things up later on to rest some legs going into Varsity, but I thought we did well to rack up a convincing lead”.

Wade spoke with confidence looking ahead to the big match.

“We have a fully fit squad,” he said.

“All the players are reaching their peak at the right time and are raring to get to Twickenham.”
