FORMER Abingdon School pupil Theo Brophy-Clews is hoping to have a tournament to remember as the World U20 Championship kicks off today.

The 19-year-old, from Wallingford, is set to start in host-nation England’s opener against Italy at the Manchester City Academy Stadium this evening (7.45).

Fly half Brophy-Clews, who made his full Aviva Premiership debut for London Irish in February, is no stranger to international rugby, having captained the under 18 side.

With England also set to face Scotland and Australia in Pool B, the teenager, cannot wait to pull on the jersey again.

“It’s amazing (to play for England), it is a feeling you don’t get anywhere else,” he said.

“It is a massive deal for me and my family.

“They are all rugby mad and I think about that when I am playing.

“When we get out on the pitch you get all these emotions, but as soon as it starts we get down to it.”

England have a fine record in the competition, having reached six finals in the last eight years.

But despite being the hosts, Brophy-Clews, who has been playing rugby since he was six-years-old, insists there is no extra pressure.

He said: “All the boys are really excited and there is no pressure and expectation – we just want to do well.

“We are just trying to play our own brand of rugby and hopefully we can make some memories for ourselves.”
