OXFORD University Greyhounds booked their spot in the first round of the Oxfordshire Cup with a 26-17 win over Witney.

A George Lewis penalty gave the west Oxon side a 3-0 lead in the preliminary round tie.

But Tom Dyer went over twice for the hosts, converting on both occasions.

Robbie Frazer added two tries, the first converted by Dyer, to make it 26-3.

Witney improved after the break, with Lewis crossing twice and adding the extras.

They pushed for another score late on, but Jamie Burke was red-carded as Greyhounds triumphed.

In the first round of the Oxfordshire Shield, Wheatley beat Abingdon 22-17 at home.

Jack Smith crossed for the hosts, but a converted try saw the visitors lead 7-5.

Wheatley upped the intensity, with Gav Stanton and Andy Willis going over.

Aaron Laman converted one of the scores to make it 17-7.

Abingdon kicked a penalty, before Craig Buddle crossed for Wheatley.

A converted try for the visitors set up a tense finish, but the hosts held on.

Blue Boar beat Littlemore 27-0, while Oxford University Whippets triumphed 36-6 over Didcot.
