RUGBY UNION: Collins seals victory
Witney climbed to sixth in the Southern Counties North table thanks to a fine 14-12 win at Beaconsfield.
It was only 7-7 at half-time despite Witney having the wind advantage, but they showed great character to edge to victory.
The decisive try, finished by Lewis Collins, was probably the best they had scored all season.
Despite Jez Hicks and Jimi Collis bossing the lineouts and Mark Serle, Adam Copperwheat and Rikki Dore edging the scrummage, Witney tried to force things early on.
Beaconsfield's pack held their own and their lock charged over from close range for a converted try.
Witney produced 15 minutes of excellent rugby after the break, culminating in Collins's try.
He combined well with Carl Strutt, Monks and Johnny Wheater before having enough speed to finish under the posts.
Henry Lamb converted, but the match was far from over.
Witney saw flanker Will Worrall yellow-carded for preventing the release of the ball and conceded a second try, but held on.
Should they beat Amersham in their final game and leaders Olney see off Beaconsfield, Witney will finish fifth.
Witney: Wheater, L Collins, J Lamb, Strutt (Elwood 60), Monks, H Lamb, G Campbell, Dore, A Copperwheat, Serle, Fowler (Richens 65), J Hicks (capt), Worrall, C Campbell, Collis (Cookson 50).
