Singers join forces on the stage

WITH the start of autumn comes the Brize Singers annual concert, which raises money for local charities.

This year, the Singers are joining forces with a group of male singers, who call themselves White Horse Harmony, and who will be singing four songs in close barbershop harmony. This is the first time that the two groups have performed together, but the Brize Singers are confident that the addition of a little barbershop harmony will add an extra musical dimension to the evening.

White Horse Harmony were originally based in Wantage, but they have their headquarters in Cumnor now. This concert is their first since moving nearer to Witney.

The Brize Singers were formed in 1969, and were originally called the RAF Brize Norton Singers, as membership was initially made up of Royal Air Force personnel and their wives. However, they quickly branched out, and began including civilians in their number.

They changed their name to Brize Singers in 2003, when they left the umbrella of the RAF.

Their autumn charity concert will take place on Friday at the High Street Methodist Church, Witney, at 7.30pm.

Chairman, Maurice Spalding, says they are very excited about joining forces with White Horse Harmony.

"It's always good to add something different to our concerts. We have heard them perform, and they really are going to prove a great attraction," he said.

As usual, the Singers will raise funds for their favourite local charities, such as Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, Talking Newspapers, Bampton Methodist Church, Witney Museum-Leisure Activity Project, St Bartholomew's Church, Ducklington, Elms Day Centre, and the High Street Witney Methodist Church.

Maurice explained that they raise money by inviting the charities to sell tickets and keep the money, which proves a very popular way of getting funds.

For tickets, phone Maurice, on 01993 842229.
