Rapunzel, a traditional family panto
 |

The curtain has gone up on Rapunzel, this year's panto at The Theatre, Chipping Norton, which is already being hailed a great success.
Written once again by the prolific novelist and playwright Simon Brett, who wrote last year's Mother Goose, this is a traditional family panto, containing all the elements of fun we have come to expect from shows at The Theatre.
Rapunzel will also feature original songs, written especially for this show by local musician Peter Pontzen, who has written and directed music for the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as for the BBC and ITV.
Written by the Brothers Grimm, Rapunzel is one of the world's best known fairy tales. Over the years, there have been many versions of this story, which tells of the couple (Gorman and Sylvana) expecting a baby. When Sylvana craves the rapunzel plant growing in a neighbour's garden, Gorman scales the wall and picks it for her. But the garden is owned by a wicked enchantress, who catches him and insists in being given the baby when it is born. The baby turns into a beautiful young woman, who the enchantress traps in a tall tower, where she remains until the handsome Prince Florimund passes by. He happens to hear Rapunzel sing, and because this is a pantomime, she is saved, and they both live happily ever after.
Rapunzel continues until Saturday, January 12. For tickets, call 01608 642350, or visit the website chippingnortontheatre.com
