A very authentic touch to the festive season
THE Oxford Waits aim to raise the roof when they perform their festive concert Hey For Christmas at Wood Green School on Friday, December 14.
This concert is part of the monthly Winter Witney Concerts series, promoted and arranged by the Witney Music Society.
Members are confident that The Oxford Waits will add a very authentic touch to this year's festive season, as they take their name from a real-life band of city musicians, known as Waits, who flourished in Oxford during the 17th century on days of rejoicing.
The original Oxford Waits performed in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, reaching their heyday during the English Civil War, and playing on throughout the later periods.
Dressed in 17th-century costume, today's Waits will perform on an array of authentic instruments, including the fiddle, bagpipes, lute, cittern, pip and tabor, hurdy-gurdy, and percussion.
Their superb singing voices will hit the high notes too, as they perform seasonal street ballads, Christmas carols, airs and rounds.
They may even recite a few festive poems too and have sometimes been known to act out a short Christmas mummers play, which is certainly something not to be missed, especially if Tim Healey dresses up as Father Christmas.
The concert begins at 7.30pm.
Tickets can be reserved at The Music Stand, High Street Witney, 01993 774890.
Free parking is available at Wood Green School.
