Leading Scottish traditional musicians
THE Big Village concert series kicks off at the New Beaconsfield Hall, Shipton-under-Wychwood, at 7.30pm on Friday, with a duo widely regarded as the world's leading Scottish traditional musicians, Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham, pictured.
Aly plays the fiddle in the Celtic tradition, and is regarded as Scotland's supreme fiddler - arguably the finest of all time. As founder member of Boys of the Lough, Ally has toured extensively in American, Europe, and the UK. He was awarded an MBE in recognition of his services to music, and was further honoured in 1999 with a degree of Doctor of Music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
Phil plays the accordion. He is a composer too. He was nominated as one of Scotland's most influential people by The Scotsman in 1996.
In recent years, Phil's workload has included numerous commissions for both television and film, and is now undertaking a considerable amount of work as musical director for television and large theatrical events. His Highlands and Islands Suite and other collaborations have been a highlight of Celtic Connections, in Glasgow. He too has been awarded an MBE. Their concert in the Cotswolds features support from special guests, Colin Fletcher, on bass, and the highly respected duo Tim Van Eyken and Jane Griffiths.
As tickets for this concert will sell out quickly, reserve yours now by phoning 01865 305305, or going to bigvillage.org
