An entertaining and spiritually moving drama
ALTHOUGH The Wesley Players have spent some considerable time trying to discover just who it was that wrote Bitter Heart, the play they have been asked to stage this month, they have not been able to come up with a name.
What they do know, however, is that Bitter Heart is a moving drama, that deals with the effects of one group of women of the Slaughter of the Innocents in Bethlehem. The action takes place during the time of the Crucifixion of Jesus, however, it doesn't centre on the Crucifixion, or on Christ's sacrifice.
It deals with the effects on Mara and her daughter Beth, whose son was among the Innocents. It's Mara who holds a long-kept secret, which unfolds as the action gets under way.
It is Judith, the local gossip and semi-professional busybody, who adds a touch of light humour into this play.
The main characters are played by Janet Rollet, Nicola Ball, other members of the cast include Jeanette Bridges and Catherine Ball.
The Players are convinced that this well-scripted drama is in the hands of local actors already known for their acting ability, and it will therefore be both entertaining and spiritually moving.
Bitter Heart will be staged for three days only in the High Street Methodist Church, from Friday to Sunday. It will be performed in the church at 7.30pm on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday, it replaces the evening service, and commences at 6pm.
Entrance is free, but there will be a retiring collection at each performance, which will go towards church funds.
