During the severe lockdown caused by the pandemic many residents took advantage of the fine weather to rediscover the town’s footpaths. A favourite route has been the Ock Valley Walk with the chance of spotting a muntjac deer or the invasive signal crayfish in the river Ock.
IN THE early 1900s plans were produced for a terrace of houses close to Albert Park.
THIS year the Abingdon Area Archaeological and Society (AAAHS) is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
THE CHARACTER of a street reflects the occupations of the community that lives and works there. Ock Street was once a thriving working- class area with malthouses, breweries and pubs cheek by jowl with chapels, sackcloth-weaving sheds and tanneries.

The new Union Workhouse in Abingdon, known locally as ‘The Grubber’, was the first in England to be constructed following the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act. The majority of the parishes covered by the union were in north Berkshire, as was Abingdon at this time, but several neighbouring Oxfordshire parishes were also included. Regulation was in the hands of a Board of Guardians representing each parish. The first Governor of the Abingdon Union Workhouse was Mr Richard Ellis who survived an attempt on his life.
