Over half of UK drivers eat regularly in their car, according to new research on Brits' latest eating habits.

Sandwiches, burgers and fish and chips are the most preferred food while "dining a la car" has become even more popular due to Covid restrictions on indoor dining, the increasing number of drive-thru food outlets and the disappointing British summer.

Asda Money surveyed 2,000 UK drivers of whom over 60 per cent admitted to eating in their vehicle when parked, with 42 per cent eating in their vehicle at least once a week and 11 per cent doing this daily.

Lunch is the most common meal and when it comes to jobs, nearly half of electricians (45 per cent) eat in their car at least once a day, followed by one third of plumbers and one quarter of lawyers and recruiters.

As well as takeaways, ‘car picnics’ are also a favourite with seven per cent of the nation preparing and eating picnics in their vehicle.

The most common reason was convenience then travelling for leisure or for work, Covid, because it is cheaper than a restaurant or because their vehicle is their main place of work.

In the research one driver said, “there is no staff room at work, so I have my break in my car”, another said that they eat while “waiting in supermarket car park when my wife is shopping”.

Alistair Ball, Head of Insurance for Asda Money, who commissioned the survey, said: “Interestingly, our research shows that many people are well prepared for this activity, bringing with them items to help them eat comfortably and clean up after themselves.”

Some 43 per cent keep napkins and wipes in their vehicle and nine per cent have gone so far as investing in a car tray that attaches to their steering wheel.
