THEY are thousands of years old but the Rollright Stones were one of the few landmarks in Oxfordshire to see a dusting of snow yesterday.

The Bronze Age monument in Great Rollright, near Chipping Norton, had a sprinkling of the white stuff. But most of the county escaped the snow despite forecasters predicting three to 6cm across Oxfordshire.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning on Monday and expected snow to settle on higher ground in areas of Oxfordshire 100m above sea level.

Met Office spokesman Mark Wilson said: “The weather warning said that there could be snow showers in Oxfordshire rather than constant snowfall. Most of the showers missed Oxfordshire and we had more snow falling on higher ground and in the North of the UK.

“This weekend is going to be relatively cold, but warmer than we expected. There is the possibility of snow showers in areas above 100m in Oxfordshire, but it is unlikely it will settle.”
