This looks like being a bumper year for music festivals in the county, if the latest line-up announcements are anything to go by.

As we revealed, both Cornbury and Truck, mug off the opposition with a couple of stellar bills – both very different, but glorious in their own way. Truck plays a blinder by pulling the Manic Street Preachers out of its hat, while Cornbury keeps its gentler-rocking constituency happy with Bryan Ferry and SEAL, as well as Bjorn Again and a mixed bag of soul, blues, pop and country.

Also announcing their bill today is the rather posher Henley Festival, which perhaps trumps them all by booking Dame Shirley Bassey.

Organisers of the gathering, held between July 6-10, on the Royal regatta site, today reveal the Gold Finger singer will perform at the black tie event with Blake on the Saturday. Also topping the bill will be Elton John on the Wednesday; Elvis Costello and The Imposters on the Thursday; Bryn Terfel and the Welsh National Opera Orchestra on the Friday; and Will Young, who closes the event on the Sunday.

Will Young said: "I’m really very excited to be closing Henley Festival on the Sunday night. I had such fun playing there last time, it’s such a beautiful setting on the banks of the river Thames, not to mention headlining alongside one of my favourite people, Sir Elton John."

* Local and international alternative rock bands, artists and film makers will take over Modern Art Oxford all day on Saturday.

Oxford promoters Idiot King have laid on a slew of treats at the event entitled “If this isn’t nice then I don’t know what is”.

In the daytime local mathy thrashers Kong, laid-back singer songwriter Salvation Bill and experimental electronic guitarist Lee Riley will show what Oxford has to offer, alongside stalls from local artists and art and film installations.

Then in the evening things will kick up a notch with cerebral math pop punk from international outfit Axes, jazz drummer Adam Betts (who also wields his sticks for Goldie and Heritage Orchestra) and cinematic experimental collective Luo, from Brighton.

The day runs from 2pm. Tickets available from modernartoxford.org.uk
