OXFORD East MP Anneliese Dodds said a general election should be held if the Government is unable to work out the 'impasse' with the EU.

Last week, the Prime Minister Theresa May said her Government had reached an 'impasse' with European leaders over Brexit.

Ms Dodds, a shadow Treasury minister, told the BBC: “We’re very concerned about where the Government is going with Brexit. We seem to have reached a brick wall because of the red lines Theresa May very recklessly set out at the beginning of this process.

"We seem to have stalemate in the Government’s approach to the EU.

"So what we need to have is a properly meaningful vote. We’re very concerned about how the Government has said the vote in Parliament would just be between no deal and Theresa May’s flawed deal: we think there should be the option to retake these back to Parliament.

"But ultimately if Theresa May isn’t willing to do that, we need to have a general election because we need a responsible government that can try to look at these questions."

Yesterday, the Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said any possible People's Vote should not include an option to stay in the EU. He also said a general election should be held if another referendum is not held.

He said doing so it would respect the successful Leave vote in the 2016 referendum.

The People's Vote campaign is backed by Oxford City Council and Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon Layla Moran.
