It was always inevitable, given the cyclical nature of things, that Britpop was going to come back. And with great tunes sung by proper bands with a surplus of attitude, its revival couldn’t come sooner.

It’s hard to forget the Britpop dominated indie scene of the 1990s and the fabricated chart battle between Blur and Oasis at the height of their success. Anthems from that time, such as Don’t Look Back in Anger, Country House and Common People still get pulses racing, and a host of bands from that time have reformed and released new material.

Fans of 90s music will be in their element tonight with a night of music at the O2 Academy celebrating the era of Cool Britannia in all its glory.

Billed as the definitive tribute to Britpop, The Britpop Boys have a swagger Liam Gallagher would be proud of – and their tribute to the British independent music scene of the 90s will have you Chasing Rainbows and looking for Wonderwalls.

The energetic five-piece pay homage to all that is quintessentially Britpop, with anthem after anthem from the icons of the age including, of course, songs by our very own Supergrass, whose debut album I should Coco, with singles Alright and Caught by the Fuzz, was the biggest selling debut album for Parlophone records since The Beatles released Please, Please Me.

Fronted by Ian Kenna and backed by an impressive band including guitarist Jon, who has played with Paul Weller and Steve Craddock of Ocean Colour Scene, and drummer Oscar who was taught by Andy MacLure of Sleeper fame, it’s safe to say that the foundations of this band are drawn straight from the bands they tribute.

The band tell us: “ It’s great to have been given the opportunity to play the O2 Academy in Oxford which is not only an iconic venue for Britpop, but also the hometown of Supergrass, a massive band of the era and obviously one of those we play tribute to.

“We’d love to get the people of Oxford buzzing about Britpop again. There is a huge revival and, who knows, it could even lead to Supergrass reforming – which would be amazing.”
