RENOWNED poets from across the UK are heading to Woodstock for an annual poetry festival.

The festival runs from Friday until Sunday, at a number of different venues in the town.

The opening reading this year will be given by Wendy Cope at St Mary Magdalene Church, on Friday at 7pm.

She will read from her latest collection, Anecdotal Evidence, which features poems about childhood, friends, love and growing older.

Another highlight will be Christopher Reid, readig from Old Toffer’s Book of Consequential Dogs, on Saturday, at 2.30pm in the town hall.

The collection is a ‘companion volume’ to TS Eliot’s Book of Practical Cats.

Organiser Rachel Phipps, of the Woodstock Bookshop, said: “We are so grateful to all the poets who have read here over the years and helped us to create a very special small festival, where audience and poets can meet and talk and make new connections.

“We are delighted that Christopher Reid is reading from his companion book to Eliot’s -this is a family event, our first in the town hall, and it would be lovely to have children as well as adults in the audience.”
