On Tuesday, a city councillor Mark Lygo branded Barton Leisure Centre's gym a 'dump' which needed immediate attention.

So yesterday, we took a visit and paid our £8.50 for one-off access to its gym and changing rooms.

Some equipment which was left for people to use had clearly begun to rust. Seven other items of gym equipment, including exercise bikes and treadmills, which had broken down in October still lay in the gym.

In a couple of cases, the equipment had been marked as requiring repair by November - but someone had amended the 11 for November on a repair sheet sellotaped to the equipment for a 12 for December.

Although the changing room cubicle shut, the lock was looser than it should have been by design.

In some cases, where the equipment did start to work, it worked less well than it might have.

Although one tap on the gym's water fountain worked, another did not. During our visit, an engineer came to inspect it but left shortly afterwards.

Sinks in the men's toilets were left somewhat unclean, while a light fitting in it had had bulbs removed but not replaced.
