A HEADTEACHER has warned parents that they risk getting stuck in a 'huge amount of congestion' if they drive their children to school this week.

Oxford Spires Academy's principal Marianne Blake has urged pupils to walk, bus or cycle into the East Oxford secondary school while Thames Water carries out works outside.

The water company is carrying out roadworks in Barracks Lane this week, off Cowley Road, which are expected to last until Friday.

Mrs Blake sent a letter to parents on Friday stating: "We will have significant disruption on [Monday-Friday] due to Thames Water outside of our school front entrance.

"It is likely that you will not be able to access the school from Cumberland Road at all over this week. The only access to the school will be from Glanville Road.

"Can I ask that all students where possible travel by bus, walk or by bike to school during this week.

"If you need to travel by car please identify an alternative dropping and collection point that is not on Barracks Lane, Reliance Way or Glanville Road.

"Potentially there could be a huge amount of congestion for any cars that try to use Glanville Road."

Part of the road outside the 1,087-pupil school has been shut due to the roadworks, between the junctions with Glanville Road and Cumberland Road.

A diversion is in place via those two roads and Cowley Road.

Also this week, Thames Water expects to carry out works on nearby Cowley Road, close to the junction with Kenilworth Avenue, where two-way traffic lights will be in place.

Further up Cowley Road outside Manzil Way Gardens, the water company said it would be working from today until Wednesday to 'make essential repairs to fix a leak.'

Motorists have been advised that disruption is likely.
