SNOW has been falling in Oxford this afternoon following a night of freezing temperatures across the county.

It's lead to issues on the roads, with slow traffic reported across the area as rush-hour descends.

Below are some of the current issues on the roads:

  • M40 - heavy traffic due to snow. Queues from J4 High Wycombe to J8 Oxford Services - drivers heading into Buckinghamshire are warned the roads are particularly hazardous there
  • Eastern Bypass - heavy traffic; clearing now (as at 6.50pm)
  • A34 - queueing traffic due to snow; clearing now most parts but traffic still bad at Wolvercote (as at 6.50pm)
  • A329 at Moreton - heavy traffic due to snow

What else you need to know 

  • Met Office says there's an 80% chance of snow right now across Oxford 9from 7pm). From 8pm - 37 per cent chance. From 9pm - 33 per cent chance of snow
  • Snow showers should clear as we head through the evening and it will remain cloudy with drizzle until the early hours
  • There's a yellow ice warning in place until 11am Wednesday - tomorrow's rush hour temperature will be mins 1. 
  • The temperature will be freezing tonight, but will drop as low as minus 3 tomorrow night

People have been sharing videos of flurries falling on social media, including Lorna Jones in Headington and Linacre College.

The Met Office at RAF Benson said temperatures at 7.30am where at -2C and warned of 'sleety showers' this afternoon which could turn to snow and settle on the higher ground nearby.

There was also a yellow weather warning in place across Oxfordshire until midday, due to freezing temperatures overnight causing ice to form on the county's roads, pavements and cycle paths.

The Met Office warned of the danger of falls and said some roads and railways may be affected by longer journey times as a result.

Temperatures today are expected to reach 4C. 

A regional forecast for London and the South East said: "Cloud increasing from the west later, along with a scattering of rain, sleet and snow showers during the afternoon."
