THAMES Valley Police's bill for Donald Trump's visit to the UK was the largest of any force in the country, new figures show.

TVP has now been given more than £6 million by the Home Office to cover the US President's visit, according to the Press Association (PA).

July's controversial trip – which saw huge protests outside Blenheim Palace, where Mr Trump was treated to a black tie dinner hosted by the prime minister – cost in excess of £14,000,000, according to police statistics released under Freedom of Information laws.

The Metropolitan Police were given nearly £3 million, around a million more than Essex Police.

The Foreign Office's costs are yet to be disclosed, meaning the total cost could rise significantly.

Mr Trump's trip to Scotland – when he played golf at his Turnberry resort on both days – cost £3.2 million, which was lower than Police Scotland initially estimated.

The British Transport Police also spent more than £200,350 during the visit, according to PA.

Oxford councillor Tom Hayes, who is the city's community safety lead and sits on a police and crime panel, said:"It's important to maintain good relations with the head of state of an important ally, but when the person filling that role spreads such hate we have to wonder how valuable the visit really would have been.

"There were officers from forces all over the country who were dragged in to police the presidential visit."

He continued: "Thames Valley Police had to divert staff from their core responsibilities when resources could have been used elsewhere.

"Was it really worth the money?"

A Home Office spokesman said: "We received applications from three forces for special grant totalling £7.9 million in relation to their additional costs arising from the US president's visit.

"These claims have been paid in full."
