Stagecoach in Oxfordshire has announced it is putting up some of its bus fares by 20p.

It is the second year in a row the company has increased fares and last year blamed congestion and increasing journey times.

The company said that it will be hiking fares and ticket prices on local buses from Sunday, March 3.

However, Stagecoach will maintain some of its popular single fares and its Oxford Tube fares.

There will be changes to the price of day, seven-day, four-week, 13-week, annual and 12-trip tickets.

Some single fares are being frozen - £1.30, £1.50, £2.00, £2.60 and £3.10 - but all other single fares will increase by 10p, with some fares for longer journeys increasing by 20p.

In Oxford city centre most return tickets are frozen with only the current £3.70 fare increasing to £3.80. Across the county return tickets will increase by 20p.

Witney Gazette:

Managing director of Stagecoach Oxfordshire Chris Coleman, above, said: "We continue to work to keep our prices as low as possible for our customers and have frozen some fares across the city.

"Even with these changes bus travel remains cheaper than commuting by car.

"We will continue to invest in improvements to our services for our customers through new vehicles and technology."

Mr Coleman was appointed last year following the retirement of Martin Sutton, who was MD since 2004 and enjoyed a 46-year career in the bus industry.
