AN ONLINE supermarket that promises it can get a beer to your door in under 28 minutes is coming to Oxford - and it could be running as soon as next month.

Mainly targeting the city’s student population, 8DOL is a bike delivery service that offers more than 500 grocery items via its app, with no minimum spend and a £1 fee.

Billed as a ‘cloud supermarket’ the company, which is similar to takeaway service Deliveroo, has been running in China since 2013 with now more than three million users.

Oxford Mail:

It has been brought to the UK by Alfie Porter, 21, and Craig Moore, 29, who started trading as 8DOL UK in Bournemouth in September.

Mr Moore said: “We wanted Oxford to be one of the first cities we open in, it has a great love of bikes and its student heritage is well known.

“We are really looking forward to bringing 8DOL to Oxford and if all goes to plan hope to launch by the end of March.”

Oxford is set to be the third UK city the service operates in after it launches of a second spot in Southampton in January.

A base of operations has been found in student-hotspot Cowley Road, with an application submitted for permission to sell alcohol for 'consumption off the premises' between 8am and 11pm.

Its founders say some people are put off conventional supermarket delivery because next day delivery is not fast enough.

The supermarket services also tend to have a minimum spend of at least £25 and charge around £4.99 for delivery.

Oxford Mail:

Mr Porter said: “It’s great to see the business expand into new cities with Oxford being next.

"Many people really like the convenience our service offers, we can help save you a trip when you have run out of milk.

"The app is simple to use and is available on both app stores.”

The online store boasts a wide range of student-orientated items, with alcohol, snacks and frozen food on offer. Fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as staples like milk and bread are also stocked. Non-food items include iPhone chargers, paracetamol and toilet roll.

The service already has a plethora of five star reviews online.

One user wrote: "Brilliant idea! I'm currently sat in bed with a bacon butty without having to go further than my front door."

Not everyone is pleased with the service, however, with one customer commenting: "They advertise 'average 28 minutes' but no one I know has ever had a delivery within this time."
