ALMOST 200 people have joined the fight to save a 300-year-old oak tree in Witney.

The tree on Waterford Road, Madley Park, could be removed by West Oxfordshire District Council as it is causing damage to an adjacent property.

An e-petition calling for the council to preserve the tree has already received almost 190 signatures since opening on Saturday.

Residents say the tree could house up to 350 species of wildlife and is 'an asset' to the local environment.

They want a root barrier installed to protect neighbouring properties instead.

The petition says: "It can be seen by all who enter the estate on Waterford Road and is greatly appreciated as an outstanding natural exemplar of its species."

The petition closes on Friday, April 19 and needs 750 signatures to be debated by the council. Click here to sign.
