Designs by artist Anna Vickers for gates featuring images of Oxford's history at adjoining No. 5 St Thomas’s Street, are recommended for approval by the authority's West Oxford Area Planning Committee.

Queen Matilda, who was once imprisoned in Oxford castle, which people will be able to see from the hotel's rooftop terrace, will be included in the gates as well as reference to the district's association with breweries.

The original application was approved in May 2017 for the demolition of the old Cooper Callas building and construction of a new 140-room Marriott hotel in Paradise Street.

A condition was that a piece of public art would be commissioned at the site and had to be approved by the committee, which will meet at 6pm on Wednesday in Oxford Town Hall.

Documents submitted with the designs state the hotel is expected to open in June, with the artwork completed after.
