A THUG who tormented his ex-partner, regularly kicking, punching and beating her, as well as pouring beer on her and threatening to kill her, has been locked up.

Chad Marshall, of Clapcot Way, Wallingford, who was jailed for his violent campaign of abuse yesterday, called out 'all I needed was some help and this is going to make it worse' as he was led out of the dock at the end of his sentencing hearing.

The 23 year-old had already admitted one count of engaging in coercive or controlling behaviour between January 2015 and October 2017.

At his sentencing hearing at Oxford Crown Court yesterday prosecutor Alexandra Bull, outlining the case, said that there had been repeated and regular instances of violence against his victim with whom he had been in a relationship at the time.

She said: "[The victim] said he was very controlling during their relationship, he would be paranoid about everything.

"He didn't like that she worked in a male dominated profession. She stopped going out with friends. She said he controlled her whole life."

Many episodes of violence were also detailed to the court including one occasion where she was sat on the sofa while he poured a beer over her before smashing the bottle and holding it against her.

Another night saw a row break out in the bedroom before Marshall began 'repeatedly punching her to the side of her head and face.'

She then lost consciousness and woke to him continuing to beat her before she screamed out and tried to escape.

As well as the violence he also made numerous threats to her and her family.

One message from Marshall said he would 'stamp on her head and burn her' and in another abusive message he said 'I will come and rape you, you stupid little rat.'

In mitigation at the hearing his defence barrister Rachel Law said that her client - who has a number of previous convictions - had found it difficult to come to terms with his offending.

She added that he had fresh support in the form of a new partner and that he was about to become a father and urged the court to impose a community penalty.

Sentencing, Judge Ian Pringle QC said that he would be 'failing in his duty' were he to pass anything other than an immediate term of imprisonment for the 'bullying' behaviour.

Marshall was jailed for two years and eight months and must pay a victim surcharge and be subject to a restraining order.
